1996 was the year first year we heard that “football’s coming home” and “I’ll tell you what I want, what I really, really want” from the Spice Girls. For me, and many others, it marked the beginning of our first tour to the Balkans.

James’s story is pieced together from fragmented notes, fading memories, and the invaluable insights of friends who were there, especially those who managed to pay attention when it mattered most. Together, these recollections form a mosaic of his experiences, capturing the surreal situations he often found himself in, where the line between the absurd and the tragic was constantly blurred.

Though the names have been changed and characters merged, the essence of the stories remains true. This is not just his account, but a tribute to all who took part in encouraging peace in the Balkans during and after one of modern Europe’s darkest periods.
